Retina mode is currently not supported when using Fluid desktop protocol so we’ll resort to using VNC through Jump.įirst enable the VNC protocol in Jump Connect and enable Screen Sharing in the system settings: The performance in this mode is excellent. Once you connect, the resolution will automatically be changed to the 1194x834 filling the entire screen of your iPad, albeit a bit blurry: Ensure the display resolutions are set as follows: Open Jump Desktop on the iPad and select the properties for the ‘fluid remote desktop’ connection to your system. After rebooting you should be able to see both the HiDPI and the regular resolutions in SwitchResX.Ĭlick on a resolution to ensure the switching works as expected. After creating the resolutions your screen should look like this:Ĭlose SwitchResX to save the settings, then reboot your Mac to activate the resolutions. You need both in order to be able to use Retina mode. One for the native 2388x1688 resolution and one for the 1194x834 halved ‘Retina’ one. Open SwitchResX from the System Settings and add two resolutions. If your experiment is successful you can buy a license.

In the steps below I’ll show you how to set things up for the iPad. It allows you to add resolutions to the macOS system, that may or may not work.

SwitchResX is a shareware application that’s been around since the early days of macOS (or Mac OS X as it was called back then). That list unfortunately does not include the slightly odd 10:7 aspect ratio 2388x1668 screen of iPad Pro 11".
When I contacted Jump Desktop support, they informed me that even though the Jump Desktop Connect (the Fluid server, if you will) can change the resolution to match the one on the iPad, it’s limited to the resolutions available on the Mac. When connecting to my MacBook however, the result was always a blurry letterboxed mess, regardless of the protocol or settings used.
The tool of choice for many iPad enthusiasts seems to be Jump Desktop, which supports VNC, RDP and their proprietary Fluid protocol.Ĭonnecting to a Windows machine using Jump Desktop’s RDP support yielded a crisp, Retina experience with perfect 1:1 pixel mapping from the Windows desktop to the iPad. If going to HighSierra or Mojave has any new Display features/enhancements that touch on this domain, please do tell, and I will happily upgrade.Since the introduction of the Magic Keyboard, interest in using an iPad as a remote terminal for desktops is bigger than ever. I'm also willing to introduce apps like QuickRes or SwitchResX to open up more resolutions if people have found these helpful. I know it's a slightly subjective question, but for what it's worth, I just want the resolution that gives me the most left-to-right screen real estate in the Tracks area whilst being able to comfortably read the text in LPX. I'm wondering what resolution folks here with similar setups are using to get that perfect balance. Switching the resoluton to what's suggested for the retina display, gives a nice clear sharp picture on the tv, but it's scales LPX to the screen the same way it does on the laptop, and I therefore get no screen real estate increase above the laptop screen at all. The native resolution which the Macbook Pro chooses for the TV automatically is 3840 x 2160 - this gives tons of real estate but waaaaay too small text to read - unusably small. I'm on the MacBook Pro 2017 15" - at the moment, I'm not concerned with trying to reach (I have ordered the proper cables and adapter to achieve this) - right now, I just want to pick the best resolution to get the most amount of real estate in the Tracks area for editing, whilst not making the text so small I can't read it. Before we go on, I am fully aware of the shortcomings of using a TV as a computer monitor vs using a true computer monitor (especially a 4k or 5k computer monitor) but the latter are cost-prohibitive for me at the moment, so with the TV I went. I bought a TCL 43" 4K TV as an external monitor especially to gain some extra real estate view of the Tracks area of Logic Pro X.
